[README.1st for MetaCard 2.4.2 Apr 15, 2002] This directory contains the MetaCard Starter Kit, a multimedia authoring and graphical application development system for UNIX/X11 workstations, Windows 3.1/95/98/NT, and MacOS 68K and PPC, and Mac OS X. This version of MetaCard is fully functional except that there is a limit on the length of script that you can create with it. Complete on-line documentation with tutorials, and a multimedia demo stack built with MetaCard are also included in this distribution. See the licensing information in the help stacks for more information about MetaCard (Choose "Licensing" from the MetaCard "Help" menu). You can get MetaCard from the MetaCard WWW site http://www.metacard.com/ and with anonymous FTP from ftp.metacard.com:/MetaCard. MetaCard Corporation (support@metacard.com) can also email the files to you (Please specify which platform you need it for). The distribution can also be sent on CDROM, DAT or QIC tape, or floppies for a nominal fee. Simple installation instructions are included below, but be sure to check the file README.install for more detailed instructions. If you are using FTP to get MetaCard, remember to set binary mode before getting any of the files (e.g. for a command-line FTP client, type "bin" at the ftp> prompt). On MacOS systems, the complete distribution for Mac OS 7/8/9 is in the file MacOS.sit on the FTP sites and the directory "MetaCard 2.4" on physical media distributions. To install MetaCard, just unstuff that file and then move the folder "MetaCard 2.4" to a convenient place on your hard drive. To run MetaCard natively on OS X, unstuff the MetaCardCarbon engine. The complete distribution Windows 3.1/95/98/NT/2000/Me/XP is in the file "mcsetup.exe" which you download and then run to install MetaCard. If you've already installed a previous release of MetaCard and just need to update the engine, tools, and help stacks, or if you just need a Win32 engine to build Windows standalones on a Mac or UNIX, get the file Win32.zip. For UNIX platforms, three files are required: the MetaCard stacks and on-line documentation (stacks.tgz), the installation script (install.sh), and one of the following engine files: bsd.tar (FreeBSD and BSDI UNIX) darwin.tar (Mac OS X console mode or with X11) hp9k700.tar (HPUX 10.20 - 11.X) iris.tar (SGI Irix 5.3 - 6.X) linux.tar (Linux Intel ELF) odt.tar (SCO Open DeskTop 2.0/OpenServer 5 and UnixWare) rs6000.tar (AIX 3.2.3 - 4.X) solintel.tar (Solaris x86 2.5 - 2.7) solsparc.tar (SPARC Solaris 2.3 - 2.7) sparc.tar (SPARC SunOS 4.1.X) The OS versions listed here are minimums: the engines will run with later OS version in all known cases, though there are minor incompatibilities on some platforms (see the bug list in the FAQ on the MetaCard WWW site for the latest information on these problems). To install MetaCard, create a new directory and put the three files into it. Then run "sh install.sh" to unpack the MetaCard files. ====================================================================== The file gzip124.tar.gz is the complete source code for gzip 1.2.4. It is not required unless you want to rebuild the gzip binaries for your system. ======================================================================
